They started in 1992, formerly known as Innocent Criminals. The bands change their name to Silverchair in august 1994, after their mainstream breakthrough in mid 1994 when they won a national demo competition with a song called ‘tomorrow’.
In 1995, Silverchair’s debut album, Frogstomp was recorded. The album were recorded in just 5 days, where by the band members were only 15. Most of the songs and lyrics written, was based on fictions and some of them such as ‘faultline’ and ‘shade’ was based on their true experience. This album consist of songs which is more to grunge and seattle scene sounds andinfluences. Daniel johns, admit it by saying that he was influenced by that kind of songs in his early stage of writings.
‘Freak Show’ was realeased early in 1997. This album was so called as the anger album, because the songs focus on the anger and backlash that the expectations of Frogstomp brought upon the band. ‘Freak’, ‘Abuse Me’ and ‘Cemetery’ becomes top 10 singles in Australia from this album.
Graduated from high school was like a freedom for this trio to enable them to concentrate on their next album. Neon Ballroom was released in march 1999. In this album, they tried to mixed their sounds and tunes with orchestral arrangements. It was a successful experimental effort indeed. The video of ‘Ana’s Song ‘ took home a trophy at the ARIA MUSIC AWARDS. In this time around, john was reported suffered from an eating disorder. ‘Ana’s Song ‘ described his battle against the suffering. It sounds funny when lyrics comes before the tunes this time. However this album is still a massive success.
During the band’s break, john started to learn to play piano, which he claimed as his new method of writings. There comes Diorama in June 2001. While recording this 4th album, Johns, no longer simply wanted to be in a rock band, he thought of himself as an artist. Diorama is the results, a professional and more thoughtful album than previous outings. Listen to ‘Greatest View’ and ‘Without You’, what would you think of it? In this album, a range of other musician were drawn in, to contribute to its success. Diorama had won 6 ARIA AWARDS in October 2002, including ‘Best Group’ and “Best Rock Album”.
March 31, 2007, they released “Young Modern” as their fifth album. “Straight Lines” was their first single out. WITH THE NEW LOOK OF DANIEL JOHNS, HOW DO YOU FIND SILVERCHAIR NOW?
